Description:
Fundamentals; physics of wave motion, energy measurement of wave motion, frequency analysis. Vibrations; vibration transmission through couplings, calculation of characteristic frequencies for fans, pumps, etc. Natural frequency vibrations versus static deflection, dampening. Principles of mounting isolation, calculation of transmission through isolating materials. Inertia blocks; fundamentals, calculations applicable to reciprocating plant. Isolation materials and type. Sound; sound power level and pressure level. Physics of sound. Sound propagation, reverberation time, inverse square law measurement and calculations, computations, using decibel values, decibel arithmetic. Rating methods, dBA, dBB and dBC networks, NC and NR curves. Standards, codes and statutes, laboratory and field testing. Sound insulation, transmission paths: acoustical absorption, attenuation in ducts and fittings, computation of system characteristics and acoustical performance.

Assessment is by assignments.

Prerequisites: Qualifying Mathematics D or Mathematics 1F and Engineering Physics or equivalent.
